guitar notes, strings?

sort of learning from my house mates how to play and just curious as they have gone to bed now, he taught me the notes but do people sometimes just press strings that dont make a note or do they just generaly stick to using the notes when making a song, dont really know about guitars so sorry of this dosent make sence

I think I get what you’re asking…but no matter where you hold the string, it’s always gonna be a note. “Notes” are just how we describe different sound frequencies in music. The notes you were shown are natural notes. The spaces in between are either flat (b) or sharp (#) for example: the first fret of the low E string is F. Go one fret up to the second fret, and your at F sharp (F#) or G flat (Gb).
