Can coated guitar strings damage frets?

I use coated electric guitar strings, have been for a few years. When I took my guitar in to get it worked on, the technician told me that i that coated strings were wearing out the frets and if I continued to use coated strings I would need a fret change soon. I would think the coating would if anything give a barrier between the frets and metal to metal contact. Is there any reason to believe that coated strings would wear on a frets faster than regular?
