As you still know very little about guitar, purchasing the right one can be a challenge. Ask advice for knowledgeable people and take their advice seriously, all the while listening to your own gut instinct. Even the most highly recommended model won’t shouldn’t be purchased if it doesn’t “feel” right to you.
If you’re going to buy an acoustic guitar go for the steel string flat top type rather than the classical nylon string type. The most inexpensive acoustics are made layers of wood laminated together to form the body and can still sound quite good. However for the best sound, choose one that is made with a solid top. These are more expensive but the extra expense is worth it if you can manage it.
Choosing an electric guitar ca be a bit tricky. There are several “famous” models of electric guitar on the market and most manufactures provide different levels of sound quality while looking almost identical. In this case you definately get what you pay for! Go for the best built and richest sounding guitar that you can afford. Try to avoid the guitars that offer all of the latest bells and whistles as they will probably provide you the best value and durability.
Whether you settle on an acoustic or electric to learn to play on, have the salesperson or a guitar playing friend try the guitar, playing different notes and chords at different neck positions. Once you are satisfied try it out yourself. Place the body on your right thigh and your left hand on the neck and see if it feels comfortable to you, is it balanced and the right “fit”. Then try it your self, strum the strings from bottom to top, what you are looking for are notes that are clear and of the same volume with no buzzing or rattling. Once you are satisfied with the sound check the guitar for any physical defects such as cracks and bad scratches. Repeat with a few of the best guitars that you have tested, the one to buy is the one that has the best overall performance and appeal to you.
